Fic in a Box 2023
Sep. 4th, 2023 12:44 pmOh look, it's the best time of the year again!

Mediums: Firstly, I love fic. Fic is great. I would not at all be disappointed with fic. That said, I really do just think that the creative potential of All The Mediums is absolutely awesome and I want to see what you do. Show me what medium makes you excited or happy or you think is neat. However, for specific inspiration points, which are not meant to be limiting because my brain is my brain, and your brain will do awesome your-brain things which my brain can't even conceive of...
I love podfic, songs, audio, not-fic-as-audio etc. Vids are awesome as well, especially when folks manage to create a narrative/ship/critique of the original when they put their cut to music. Art and comics are *amazing* and I am in awe of people who can make art. I really love in-universe documents, diaries, letters, drawings etc. Reddit threads and other ways outsider povs or 'commoners' can comment on whatever main character shenanigans is happening is always awesome. Meta and essays are joy. Knitting/crochet/cross stitch patterns? Yes please.
Crossovers
Tony DiNozzo ships: I fell into the DiNozzo as the crossover little black dress man who looks good on everyone subcategory of a subcategory, and I *ship him with anyone*. I specifically like a Tony of the 'canon whumped him in ways unaddressed in canon' flavour, so Tony feeling betrayed and getting out of NCIS and having outside supporters is always lovely. My fanon-flavoured Tony is the one who is smarter than he lets folks see, emotionally and psychologically run down, and a little broken, and doesn't think anyone will ever give a shit about him.
Tony/Eliot Spencer: Eliot Spencer makes my id happy. He's the perfect version of a physically competent action hero with a past he's not proud of. My competence kink is feral for this reformed murder man who thinks guns are cheating, but also just needs to *fight someone* whenever he's had a bad day. I love him. Let him be Tony's backup, and they can feel awkward about praise together, and kink on each other's competence, and support each other's blindspots.
Tony/Spencer Reid & Tony/Penelope Garcia: ... my competence kink is showing for these two as well. I like *nice things* happening to Reid and Garcia. I want to be Garcia when I grow up, at the very least have her wardrobe and my own Morgan, but I also support Reid's ability to have more moments of infodumping, so I'm probably more Reid (minus the competence) if I'm going to identify with one of them. Just saying, I identify with them, so I want nice things for them. Tony is a nice thing, and they can be a nice thing for Tony. Support through trauma aftermath and complicated DC politicing? Garcia offering him a new ID because Tony's had a bad time and wants to escape, and she'll help however she can? Meet cute at a crime scene?
Edmund Pevensie & Tom Riddle: I would love to see something which pokes at their shared (and wildly different) experiences in the muggle world of WWII: I can't imagine that Tom is happy that the Pevensies were evacuated, and he wasn't. Them seeing something a bit traumatic in each other? I don't see Edmund as evil, but I don't think that predestined evil child Tom is as interesting as a kid who never had anyone and learnt to survive by needing power. I'd love to see them be complicated together. I would love Edmund in the Wizarding World (and feel free to make him not-a-muggle; was he over 11 in TLTWTW? Maybe he just hadn't got his Hogwarts letter yet, and they're actually contemporaries?) How would Edmund's memories of Narnia fit into a Hogwarts education? Do they have arguments about the social assumptions of 1940s Christianity?
Ronon in Farscape - check down at Farscape & Stargate expansions
Stargate
Thematics & WB in Stargate... I'm interested in the politics of the SGC vs Earth politics, the colonialism of Pegasus, and all the aftermaths which might happen. Make it complicated, and make the Earthlings not know what's going on in Pegasus? Jack O'Neill vs Earth interests being so very *small minded* and he would just like to shoot the Joint Chiefs now, please Henry, they're idiots.
Star Wars
My SW bookmarks are probably 80% time travel fix its. I know this. I do like other SW tropes. It's just that SW time travel fics are a proven antidote against depression? Or something. (Sometimes they even time travel to the future! Drop Mace Windu in carbonite and wake him up in OG trilogy?)
anyway, other tropes I adore: Mandalorian culture fics; it's probably the adoption tropes that does it for me. So much found family and warriors and generational trauma, and all the complicated ways to look at cultural genocide from internal vs outside actors.
Qui-Gon getting bitch slapped? I know I said it in my signup (and typoed Mandalorian, oops), but as a kid I loved Qui-Gon with the lack of nuance of bby Anakin. I remember reading the Jedi Apprentice books as a kid and they were *wild*. I want to know how many Jedi Temple norms were broken in them. What was *meant* to happen to Initiates, if it wasn't a kids adventure story, and how does Jedi politics overlap with best practice, and how often were Sithly shenanigans interferring?
I love aliens being alien. Letting folks be inhuman, talking about sapient rights, the mechanisms of which cultures are actually xenophobic and how to integrate species in the Jedi temple? Nocturnal species have their own rhythms and specialities? The Temple's complicated cafeteria systems to account for so many diets? How many padawan-Master pairs are cross-species, and how do they adapt to each other? Does a species like Yoda/Grogu usually end up with multiple masters over their padawanship because of their different aging speed? More about Madame Nu and her archives, and how they account and keep records, and what gets priority?
I read from the Star Wars - All Media tag, so while I lurk in Prequels-Clone Wars most often, it's because I can't handle tragedy right now and Emperor Palpatine with pet Vader makes me sad. Don't feel like you have to stay within the time frame of the Prequels if there's a story to be told from another time period with my chosen blorbos or WB tags.
Additional characters which bring me joy and maybe I should have picked Clone Wars over Prequel, but that way I wouldn't have had Shmi nominations...
Ahsoka Tano, Plo Koon, Asajj Ventress. And of the Clones, Rex, Cody, Fox, Echo & Fives make me especially happy, as does Clone politics and world building.
Also, since I am *feral for Time Travel*, of the OG trilogy, I love Luke being a sunshine boy who is also completely unbothered by the mass murder of destroying the Death Star, Leia being a hardass and politically trained and also *traumatised*, and why not throw in some Luke/Han/Leia for a love triangle.
DCU
Jason/Slade: My competence kink met my badass kink and decided to simp? I genuinely think they work *excellently* together as a complex and believable pairing who aren't so fucked up that they'd implode, but also so complex that they make each other's lives more interesting for their presence.
Alfred: His ability to roll with it is a supernatural strength, and I love him. The competence. The lack of flapability. The ability to raise *Bruce* and then hang around for the murder children and the circus brats and the chaos? I love him. Anything with Alfred being competent, or a badass, or an emotional touch stone for others, or just a force for good in the chaos. I love him so much.
WB: I adore outsider pov on Gotham or how Gotham works etc. What do folks think of their Rogues and chances of living past 16?
I am aware that you might have matched on WB: Any for DCU and have no interest in the Bats and Gotham, so anything which deals with how regular humans deal with supers would be excellent. What goes on in the reddit threads about whatever world ending shenanigan the Justice League gets up to? Does superheroes and villains mess up local politics? What about the price of affordable housing in NY? Insurance premiums? The application forms for becoming a prison guard for super villains?
Harry Potter
Farscape
I love the tone of this show. The chaos meets puppetry meets John's overwhelmed expression. The way it just *goes with it*, and lets things be alien (I don't care that the alien plants are spraypainted purple, it's magnificent). They introduce an idea or concept, and they let it *run wild*, and it lasts more than an episode, which feels like that was a rare choice in 90s sci fi. The way they handled Clone Crichton is just... frelling perfect. From a craft point of view, as well as for the storylines themselves.
I would adore some outsider pov things - a galactic reddit channel, or the earthlings pov on the back on earth episodes (any of the media or internet gossip, or the politics, or the military involvement). Space prison paperwork? How to feed Zhaan on a prison ship in space? The history of Leviathans?
Anything which highlights Crichton as the alien as well, because *perfection*.
Will Darling Adventures
I adore all of them. There is nothing I wouldn't love. They are perfect blorbos with so much trauma and competence and I am mush for them all.
Moon Knight (TV)
The Martian (2015)
I'm not wedded to the movie over the book version. If you prefer Mark lose contact with Earth by frying Pathfinder, Lewis doesn't steal Beck's glory in catching Mark, or you want Vincent to be Venkat instead, I am cool with that. The two are so close, so feel free to choose which bits you prefer when they deviate.
here's my author's notes from my 17k Vincent/Mark fic from last year FiaB, because I think this is what I fundamentally want from this fandom:
Author's Note: thank you so much for this prompt. It made me go back to this old favourite, and poke for myself what had always struck me as the biggest flaw of the movie (and book). A common aspect, often overlooked in sci fi, where the plot and cleverness overtakes the need for human connection.
Johanssen’s parents get more screentime and personality than Mark’s family do. Choosing to ignore interpersonal relationships is a sci fi staple, but I just wanted Mark to have someone he was missing, and someone who was missing him, because interpersonal drama is impossible with a man by himself, who has no one to miss.
This fic is incredibly indulgent of my personal nerdery, but also completely spiralled out of control. Once I started thinking about how I wanted to write a Mark-has-personal-connections fic, I realised I couldn’t write a Vincent-has-no-personal-connections fic, so there’s OCs and history and reminicing all over the place. Family (found or born) is more than two parents off screen that Mark asked Lewis to say goodbye to, or at least it should be.
Give them *connections* (either Mark or Vincent or both). I'd especially love an aftermath fic. Trauma recovery fic? Trying to find normalacy, but it doesn't exist? Dealing with the inherent insecurity of worrying about the atmosphere disappearing? Transcripts of his therapy sessions? Transcripts of his therapy sessions being leaked and the public's response to them? How does Mark feel about potatoes, and does *every talk show* that Annie makes him go on offer him a potato dish like they think they're clever?
Reconnecting with Earth? Dealing with the issues of years on Mars, medical or psychological or social? It's not just that Mark is different when he gets back, but everyone on Earth now thinks they know Mark, and what would that be *like*? Little kids have done science fair projects about his poop, and they will send him links to their work. He has no privacy, and the world feels like he belongs to them? (and in some ways they are right; what does it feel like to know that billions of dollars and so much social capital was spend on him?).
Humans are Space Orcs
...I feel like I should just underline the title, because *fact*. Let humans be weird. I think there's so much potential for this idea, and I am *here for it*.
NOTE TO FUTURE YETI: You asked to be put into Extension Gaol for 2024. You only have until the first deadline, you fool of a cryptid.
